Commission for Jesie, She wanted a sage fan relating to reptiles. The handle is made from snake shed, it is sealed in resin to protect from wear. 3 glass beads representing the sky, earth, and sea, basic elements used in the creation of the world.
In aztec mythology some stories tell of a giant caiman creature that lived in the worlds waters, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca hunted the caiman, and make the world we know from it's body parts. The feather wrap represents the caiman.
The fish is representative as a offering to the Caiman, who is still in the living soil/ There is also a piece of snake vertebrae on the handle, which symbolized the bones Quetzalcoatl brought back from the underworld to create man as we are today.
I like to include teeth to sage fans, since they are designed to waft purifying scents I only find it fitting to bare teeth to the spirits you're banishing. I also find the sound of bone and bead to be very soothing.
I love the amount of meaning it has!
I try to focus on themes and myths when I create things, Especially when the item is intended to be used regularly. :>
